The IPL Laser Therapy Procedure & Recovery

During an IPL laser procedure at Lunamé Medical Aesthetics, a specially designed handpiece is applied to the skin’s surface, emitting a broad spectrum of light pulses. These pulses are absorbed by the targeted areas, breaking down pigment and stimulating collagen production. While the procedure is relatively quick and well-tolerated, patients may experience a mild sensation of warmth and a slight “snapping” feeling during the treatment.

Recovery from IPL is minimal, with most individuals able to return to their daily activities immediately. Some redness and mild swelling are expected after the procedure, similar to a mild sunburn, but these effects typically subside within a few hours to a day. Protecting the treated area from excessive sun exposure is essential and following post-procedure care instructions to optimize results. A series of IPL sessions may be recommended, spaced a few weeks apart, to achieve the best outcome and maintain healthier, more radiant skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Qualify for IPL Laser Therapy?
People who are pregnant, tanning—including sunless tanning/spray tans—taking Accutane, or are taking light-sensitive antibiotics such as doxycycline, minocycline, or tetracycline should not receive treatment. The procedure is not advisable for patients with active acne cysts, large pustules, highly active rosacea, or active herpes breakouts.
Most patients describe a 2/10 pain level, with a sensation similar to the snap of a rubber band. We clean and apply a cool gel to help minimize the discomfort. We also have a topical anesthetic that can be used for maximum comfort. For sensitive skin, a cool compress can be applied following treatment.
Skin can appear red, and brown pigment spots may appear darker immediately after treatment. Some patients experience minor bruising or swelling. Rarely, temporary blisters, changes in skin color, and permanent scarring can occur.
Sun exposure should be kept at a minimum for a week after treatment. A medical-grade sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater should be used daily after treatment.
