One of the notable advantages of miraDry is its minimal downtime and straightforward recovery process. Most patients can resume their regular activities immediately after the procedure. While some individuals may experience temporary swelling, redness, or mild discomfort in the treated area, these effects are generally short-lived and easily manageable.

Don’t I Need Those Sweat Glands?
Believe it or not, the sweat glands in your armpits are unnecessary. You are born with approximately 2 million sweat glands throughout your body—your underarms only contain about 2% of those glands. With miraDry, you will experience the many benefits of stopping sweat in the underarm area, but you will continue to sweat elsewhere.
First, we clean your underarms to remove the pre-prescribed numbing cream. We take photos of the treatment area for our records, then outline the hairline of the underarm. We clean the underarms again to ward off the risk of infection, then inject local anesthetic through small needles. Then, we measure the underarms and apply a temporary tattoo to guide the miraDry pulses. We apply lubricant to the underarm, then begin to lay down the pulses. We do one underarm at a time so patients can lie comfortably. The procedure takes 2-3 hours, depending on the underarm size.
The most common side effects are swelling, discomfort, tenderness, soreness, and bruising. Some patients experience an altered sensation, which typically goes away. You may experience redness and bumps in the area, hyperpigmentation, and numbness or tingling. There is also a risk of ulcerations, rashes, scarring, and infection. To prevent a side effect known as tight banding, we give you stretches, which patients should start 3-4 days after their procedure.
People with a pacemaker or an ICD, are on supplementary oxygen, are pregnant, have issues with anesthesia, or have had surgery in the underarm area are not eligible for the miraDry treatment.
We recommend shaving 3-4 days before the treatment. We need minor hair growth in the area to use as a guide for the pulses. We prescribe an antibiotic to begin taking one day before the procedure. We also prescribe EMLA cream, which should be administered 90 minutes prior to the appointment. You should arrive with the EMLA cream on your underarms. We recommend wearing a loose tank top that will not rub the treatment area after the procedure, as it can be uncomfortable.
Most patients experience minimal downtime and can return to regular activity shortly after the procedure. Patients need to keep the treatment area clean and continue the antibiotic. We recommend wearing loose tops and avoiding sleeveless tops for 1-2 weeks. During the first few days, we strongly recommend icing and using ibuprofen around the clock to aid in swelling. Patients should not shave or use deodorant for the first week. Once you are ready to shave and apply deodorant, use a brand-new razor and deodorant to avoid the risk of infection. Patients should avoid any vigorous activity for 1-2 weeks. Please also check out our post-care guidelines.

miraDry Post-Care Guidelines

What is miraDry?

Please follow these instructions after your miraDry treatment. If you have any questions, please call our office at 610-518-7546.

  • You must keep the area clean – wash with water and a gentle liquid soap.
  • Stay away from dirty or dusty areas to minimize risk of bacterial infection.
  • It is possible you may experience swelling for the next 1-2 weeks. Do not wear sleeveless tops, instead wear loose fitting tee shirts for the next 1-2 weeks until swelling subsides.
  • Massage the area for 5 minutes, 5 times a day for 5 days as tolerated without causing pain. A good way to remember this is to massage:
    • as soon as you wake up
    • at breakfast
    • at lunch
    • at dinner
    • before bed
  • Avoid any vigorous activity for two weeks post-treatment. If you normally exercise heavily, wait before resuming your upper body exercise routine. If you experience any irritation visually or by sensation after exercise, stop and call the office.
  • Finish course of antibiotics as prescribed.
  • Avoid shaving until the tenderness has subsided enough for your comfort level. Begin the use of a brand new razor to avoid risk of infection.
  • Avoid applying any antiperspirant/deodorant within the first three (3) days to one (1) week. Do not apply over any broken skin. Begin use of a brand new deodorant to avoid risk of infection.
  • You may take 600mg of ibuprofen every 6-8 hours with food for pain and swelling for the next three (3) days.
  • If no allergies, you may take Percoset (1-2 pills) every 6-8 hours as needed for extreme pain. It may be a good idea to take one before bed the first night of the procedure to help you sleep. Do not drive, or make any important decisions while taking this. The office will supply you with the medication.
  • Use ice as needed for pain and swelling. Place a cotton cloth between the ice and your skin to prevent frostbite.
  • Your underarms can take up to two (2) weeks or longer to heal from the procedure.
  • Begin arm stretches (shown below) 3-4 days after the procedure. Perform each stretch 3-5 times per session, holding for 8-15 seconds. Perform three (3) times a day.
